Sacred Ground: A Call to Discernment
June 4, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 10:50 am
“If you’ve come this far, chances are your heart has been broken. You’ve wished for ways to heal the wounds of racism, wounds we all bear…You’ve wondered what it will take for America to engage in changing hearts as well as laws. You’ve followed the news and social media, perhaps marched and prayed, and wondered again and again, “What can I do with a problem so huge?” You are not alone. The Episcopal Church is in the midst of an unprecedented, sustained focus on racial justice and reconciliation.”
If these words from The Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers resonate with you, join us for adult education the first three Sundays in June as we share more about Sacred Ground.
Sacred Ground is a dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. It invites participants to walk back through history in order to peel away the layers that brought us to today, and to do so in a personal way, reflecting on family histories and stories, as well as important narratives that shape the collective American story. This program holds the vision of beloved community as a guiding star – where all people are honored and protected and nurtured as beloved children of God, where we weep at one another’s pain and seek one another’s flourishing.
Participating in Sacred Ground is a dedication of your time as well as your energy. Groups, called circles, meet together for eleven sessions as well as engaging in a variety of reading and films. The experience is life-changing, and this feels like the necessary next step for our anti-racism commitment at St. Peter’s.
Is God calling you to Sacred Ground? Our gatherings in June will be a time to learn more about Sacred Ground and discern your participation in this program when St. Peter’s launches our own Sacred Ground circles this September. Each week we will share information about the program’s structure, approach, and leaders. There will also be time at the end of each gathering for intentional discernment and prayer.
