Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia
October 15, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 10:50 am
Join Meg Bowersox, Manager of Gallery Interpretation at the Museum of the American Revolution, who will share stories and some of the research behind the museum’s special exhibit “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia.” The exhibition brings together—for the first time—more than 100 historical artifacts and documents to tell the inspiring story of free Black Philadelphian James Forten and his remarkable family, as they battled slavery and defended freedom from the Revolutionary era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. For many years, the Fortens lived on Lombard Street, as neighbors to St. Peter’s, and worshipped at The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. The exhibition runs through November 26 at the Museum of the American Revolution.
