Practice the Pause

As part of our Lenten Seeking series, this Sunday our focus will be the teachings of spiritual director Caroline Oakes, author of “Practice the Pause: Jesus’ Contemplative Practice, New Brain Science, and What It Means to Be Fully Human.” Oakes offers easy-to-understand explanations of how new brain science is confirming what every spiritual tradition has been telling us for millennia: by practicing the pause, we become more self-aware and better able to understand others. We become more “God aware.” With a refreshing focus on the Eastern Christian understanding of Jesus as a master of wisdom, Oakes shines a spotlight on Jesus’s own centering pause practice as a transformative path for personal and social change. We learn that even a seven-second pause practice can move us beyond the fight-or-flight responses of our ego in our daily lives and actually equip us to cultivate the common good in the world.
About our Lenten Seeking Series:
This year, St. Peter’s is living into Lent through the theme of Seeking. Throughout his ministry, Jesus encounters people who are seeking: a new beginning, a different life, a deeper faith. In these interactions, an unveiling often occurs—assumptions are disrupted, a new perspective is revealed, mystery grows.
Like the characters in our Lenten scriptures, we are also seeking many things: clarity, connection, wonder, justice, balance. We are seeking our calling, the sacred, and how to live as a disciple. By focusing on this theme, we can unpack big questions in ways that are honest and faithful. Asking ourselves often: What am I seeking? What is God seeking?
To do that, it makes sense to spend some time with all-star seekers! Join Rev. Sarah as she dives into the writings and other resources of faith leaders are seeking a closer connection with God and neighbor in imaginative and authentic ways. These sessions will feature different approaches and formats, from presentations to small group conversations.
